house of leaves: mark z. danielewski

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

i just realized that my reading frenzy came to a halt with house of leaves. though i have read a couple books since, i haven’t been compelled to write reactions to them because i’ve been i’ve been stuck on needing to post a reaction to house of leaves.

in the spirit of my new ‘little things’ mentality, suffice it to say that it was a difficult read, and not one that i especially appreciated the merits of. i actually read through about five pages of a fifteen or twenty-page footnote which consisted entirely of building names before i decided that i was not going to take anything away from actually reading the whole thing and just skipped it all together. i mean, i get the effect he was going for with that, a kind of absurdist academic text written by some crazy, old, shut-in man as interpreted by a sex, drug and alcohol-addled tattoo apprentice who at times inexplicably writes like a, well, writer.

so in short, (too late) if frustration was what danielewski aimed for, he hit it spot on.

little things

owing to my inability to stay focused on large, long-term projects, i’m beginning a small sketchbook for little things: smaller pet projects which i believe i can reasonably complete without getting overly frustrated, running out of time, or getting in over my head.

though it occurs to me now that the idea of a collection of small, particulate projects is in fact a large project itself. hopefully i can keep up some kind of regular habit with it.
